Biostatistics Core

The Biostatistics Core of the Center for Clinical Investigation provides statistical consulting and collaboration for all aspects of statistics and biostatistics applications. Our biostatisticians have advanced degrees and appointments at Harvard Medical School. Our collaborations range from pilot studies to multinational clinical trials. Since the Biostatistics Consulting Service began in 1998, we have collaborated on over 600 projects. In our current model since 2004 when we moved into the Center for Clinical Investigation, our biostatisticians have collaborated on over 400 projects and are co-authors on over 150 original articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.


Biostatistics Consulting Service Staff

Shelley Hurwitz, PhD is the Director of Biostatistics in the Center for Clinical Investigation and the General Clinical Research Center, and is based in the Division of Endocrinology at Brigham and Women's Hospital with a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hurwitz has over twenty years of statistical consulting and collaborating experience at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, and Stanford University Medical Center.
Jie Chen, PhD is a biostatistician in the Biostatistics Center, and is also a senior statistician at the University of Massachusetts in Boston where she teaches graduate and undergraduate statistics. Dr. Chen has over ten years experience in statistical consulting with special expertise in survey research, health policy research, diabetes research, and women's health.
Hillary Keenan, PhD is a biostatistician in the Biostatistics Center, based at the Joslin Diabetes Center, with a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Keenan has over ten years of consulting experience with special expertise in population studies, statistical genetics, and translating wet lab research results into clinical study designs.
Rie Maurer, MA is a biostatistician in the Biostatistics Center and is based in the Division of Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital with an appointment at Harvard Medical School. Ms. Maurer has over ten years of statistical consulting and collaborating experience in the Partners HealthCare groups.
Maria Shubina, DSc is a biostatistician based in the Biostatistics Core of the Center for Clinical Investigation. Dr. Shubina has over five years of statistical consulting experience with special expertise in venous thromboembolism research, sleep medicine, medical informatics, statistical genetics, psychiatry research, and bioassay analysis.
